Dear Austin ISSA members,
The two topics for this month are about jobs.
Recently, we celebrated Memorial Day. Originally called “Decoration Day” it is an annual day of remembrance for those who have died while serving in the U.S. armed forces. We are very fortunate to live in a country where the right to peacefully assemble, worship and speak is guaranteed by the First Amendment. Arlington, Gettysburg, Normandy, Pearl Harbor and Texas State Cemeteries serve as a reminder to us that the greatest gift that one can give others is to sacrifice their own lives for our sake.
This was not about barbecues or sales at the mall but a day where we should spend the time celebrating our life and blessings with family and friends thanks to the ultimate service paid by others. We should be fortunate to live in a city that is recognized as an information security hotspot, that our skills are in high demand and that there is a strong community where people want to help their peers improve their skills.
This is a good time to share our knowledge with others especially those in the service. If you know of any veterans who are interested in entering the information security space please invite them to one of our chapter meetings and introduce them to the board. We would be happy to do whatever we can to help them find training and other assistance to help begin their information security career. They’ve sacrificed so much for us; it’s the least we can do to repay them for their service.
The second is to announce the SANS CyberTalent Fair which will be held on Wednesday, June 7 which is an online event to enable job seekers network with top information security employers. The CyberTalent Fair will include SANS’ VetSuccess Immersion Academy which provides advanced technical training to help veterans and active duty military personnel transition to the civilian job field.
